WhatsApp gets more expensive on 1 October 2026: what changes

From 1 October 2026, Meta charges for service messages sent inside the 24-hour window. You get 1,000 free messages a month, and without a payment method on file delivery stops. Here is what to sort out.

What changes on 1 October 2026?

From 1 October 2026, Meta charges for two message types that are free today: service messages (your own free-form replies to a customer) and utility templates, both sent inside the 24-hour customer service window. You pay the utility template rate that applies in the recipient's country.

Until now it worked differently. When a customer messaged you, a 24-hour window opened in which you could reply as often as you liked at no cost. That is what goes away.

Three things stay free. Incoming messages from customers cost nothing. The 24-hour window itself still exists. And conversations that arrive through qualifying entry points keep their free 72-hour period.

How many WhatsApp messages stay free?

Every business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages per month. You only start paying from the 1,001st message. The allowance resets monthly and does not roll over: whatever you do not use in October is gone on 1 November.

For a practice or a shop handling a few dozen WhatsApp conversations a week, almost nothing changes financially.

If WhatsApp is a genuine service channel for you, that 1,000 suddenly becomes a number to manage. Twenty conversations a day at three replies each already puts you around 1,800 messages a month.

Add a payment method before 30 September

This is the part with the biggest consequences and the part most often missed. From 1 October, a valid payment method in your Meta account is a condition of delivery.

If no payment method is on file, Meta stops delivering your service messages. Customers still reach you, but your replies do not arrive. From their side it looks like you are ignoring them.

So check this week that a working payment method is attached to the number you handle customer contact on. It takes five minutes and it stops your customer service from going quiet without anyone noticing why.

Why this hits smaller businesses hardest

Large companies have people who track changes like this. A plumber, a webshop or a clinic with fifteen staff does not. They find out when the first invoice lands, or worse, when customers start phoning because WhatsApp went silent.

There is a second problem. At smaller companies a WhatsApp conversation tends to be made of many short messages. A question, a follow-up question, a photo, a confirmation, a thank you. Every one of those replies now counts.

Your bill is therefore driven not by how many customers you help, but by how many messages you need to help them. That is a different cost model from the one most businesses are set up for.

Four ways to keep your WhatsApp bill down

Answer more completely in fewer messages. Where you used to send three short replies, send one complete answer. It costs less and it reads better.

Resolve the question on first contact. Every time a customer has to ask again because your answer was incomplete, that is an extra message. First time right is now the cheapest route too.

Drop the filler. Messages like 'You're welcome' or 'Let me check that for you' count towards your total. They sound friendly, but from October they cost money without moving the customer forward.

Make sure common questions are answered correctly straight away. Opening hours, delivery times, warranty, returns policy: the more often the first reply lands, the further you stay from that 1,000 line.

What an AI agent changes here

The new pricing rewards exactly what a good AI agent is built for: answering a question completely in one go rather than spreading a conversation across ten short messages.

The Heyloha WhatsApp agent uses your own website and documents as its knowledge base. The first answer is usually the only answer: prices, opening hours, delivery times and terms, right the first time. Less back and forth means fewer messages.

When the agent cannot resolve something, it hands the conversation to a colleague along with the context of what has already been discussed. Your colleague does not have to ask the customer to repeat themselves, which saves a few more messages.

And because the agent replies around the clock, a larger share of your conversations falls inside the window where the incoming message is free and a single good answer finishes the job.

What to do this week

Check your payment method in Meta Business Manager first. That is the only step with a hard deadline of 30 September.

Then look at how many messages you actually send per month. Comfortably under 1,000 and you can relax. At or above it, this is the moment to look at how your conversations can get shorter.

Finally, check the exact rates for your country in your own Meta account rate card before you plan around any number. Rates differ per market and Meta publishes them per account.

Frequently asked questions about the WhatsApp price change

When does the WhatsApp pricing change take effect?

On 1 October 2026. From that date Meta charges for service messages and utility templates sent inside the 24-hour customer service window. A valid payment method must be in your Meta account by 30 September 2026, or delivery of your service messages stops.

How many WhatsApp messages can I still send for free?

Every business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages per month. From the 1,001st message you pay the utility rate for the recipient's country. The allowance resets each month and unused messages do not carry over.

Do incoming WhatsApp messages from customers cost money?

No. Messages customers send to you remain free. Only your own replies inside the 24-hour window become billable, along with utility templates. The 24-hour window itself continues to work as it does today.

What happens if I do not add a payment method?

From 1 October 2026 Meta stops delivering your service messages. You still receive messages from customers, but your replies never arrive. To the customer it looks like you are not responding, even though you are.

What is the fastest way to reduce my WhatsApp costs?

Need fewer messages per resolved conversation. Answer completely instead of in fragments, cut unnecessary confirmations, and make sure common questions are answered correctly first time. An AI agent on WhatsApp does this automatically.
